Spain triumphs over England to claim Euro 2024 title
Spain secured a thrilling 2-1 victory over England in the final of Euro 2024, held at the Olympiastadion in Berlin.
The match, which saw all goals scored in the second half, showcased Spain’s resilience and tactical prowess.
The first half was a tightly contested affair with few clear chances. England’s defensive strategy, particularly the efforts of Luke Shaw, who replaced Kieran Trippier at left-back, successfully contained Spain’s dynamic winger, Lamine Yamal.
Despite losing Rodri at half-time, Spain struck first shortly after the break. A beautifully orchestrated play saw Yamal cutting inside to deliver a precise pass to Nico Williams, who finished confidently at the far post.
England, however, responded with vigor. With under 20 minutes remaining, a rapid counter-attack saw Bukayo Saka speeding down the right flank.
Despite Spain’s defensive efforts, Saka’s cutback reached Jude Bellingham, who set up Cole Palmer for a composed finish from the edge of the box, leveling the score.
The decisive moment came in the final five minutes. Marc Cucurella’s cross found Mikel Oyarzabal, whose first-time shot sailed past Jordan Pickford, securing Spain’s lead once more.
England nearly equalized immediately after falling behind. A corner from Palmer was met by Declan Rice’s header, which was saved by Unai Simon.
Marc Guehi’s rebound was cleared off the line by Dani Olmo, and Rice’s subsequent attempt narrowly missed the target.
Spain withstood England’s late surge and held on through four minutes of added time, clinching their fourth European Championship title.
The victory adds to Spain’s storied history in European football, while England continues to search for their first major trophy since the 1966 FIFA World Cup.
This dramatic final will be remembered for Spain’s tactical brilliance and England’s spirited fight, encapsulating the passion and unpredictability of football.
