Pep Guardiola set to extend Manchester City tenure beyond next season after positive talks
Manchester City is poised for a significant boost, as manager Pep Guardiola is likely to remain with the club beyond the summer of 2025 following promising initial discussions.
Uncertainty about Guardiola’s future had been growing, particularly since the end of last season.
Entering what was thought to be his final summer transfer window, speculation about his potential departure increased.
Guardiola himself admitted on the last day of the Premier League season that he was “closer to leaving than staying.”
“The reality is I’m closer to leaving than staying. Eight years will be nine. Right now, my feeling is I want to stay next season. We’ll talk with the club; we have time to talk next season,” Guardiola said.
Over the summer, Guardiola traveled to Abu Dhabi to present the club’s fourth consecutive Premier League title to the ownership, including Sheikh Mansour.
During this visit, he held crucial discussions with Sheikh Mansour, chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak, chief executive Ferran Soriano, and sporting director Txiki Begiristain.
According to Manchester City insider Tolmie’s Hairdoo on X (formerly Twitter), these talks have led Guardiola to consider staying at the Etihad Stadium beyond the summer of 2025.
The support of his family, particularly his wife and children, has been a significant factor in his decision.
Despite his wife’s business interests outside of Manchester, the Guardiola family still feels at home in England, whether visiting, working, or studying. This personal comfort has influenced his decision to stay.
The insider also noted that Guardiola was “extremely heartened” by his conversations in Abu Dhabi with Sheikh Mansour and Khaldoon Al Mubarak.
Financially, Manchester City is prepared to continue paying Guardiola £15 million annually, preferring this expenditure over a similar investment in a player who might not sustain the same level of success.
Currently, Manchester City is focused on preparing for the 2024/25 campaign. The club is actively looking to strengthen the squad, particularly in central midfield, where a suitable backup for Rodrigo is needed.
Other potential signings include a left-sided full-back and a right-wing option, despite the expected arrival of Savio from ESTAC Troyes.
One player not under consideration, despite rumors, is RB Leipzig’s Dani Olmo. There has been no movement on his £50 million release clause, and no discussions have taken place with his current club.
As the new season approaches, Manchester City fans can look forward to the possibility of continued success under Pep Guardiola’s leadership, extending beyond 2025.
