Manchester City may have to unload several players to unlock their summer spending
Manchester City fans are waiting for the champions to make a substantial move in the transfer window, it may be a case of waiting for City to spring to life. Several players that the champions have to unload this summer could unlock City’s ability to spend.
Joao Cancelo
Joao Cancelo’s future remains uncertain. Despite spending last season on loan at Barcelona, he is still with Manchester City. Reports suggest interest from Saudi Pro League clubs Al Ahli and Al Ettifaq, but Cancelo prefers a return to Barcelona. However, Barcelona’s financial constraints complicate this deal. A permanent move would benefit City by clearing Cancelo’s wages and resolving ongoing uncertainties about his future.
Yan Couto
Yan Couto, who impressed on loan at Girona, is another player likely to leave. Borussia Dortmund and Juventus are reportedly interested, with Dortmund willing to spend €20-25 million. A bidding war would be advantageous for City, potentially bringing in a significant transfer fee and clearing Couto’s wages.
Kalvin Phillips
Kalvin Phillips, who has struggled to make an impact at City, also appears to be on his way out. Despite interest from Everton reported in May, there has been little movement. City hopes for a permanent deal to offload Phillips’ salary, although this remains uncertain.
Unloading Joao Cancelo, Yan Couto, and Kalvin Phillips could free up the champions to make moves in the transfer window. Although not first-team regulars, their departures would help clear the wage bill and bring in funds, making it a situation to watch during the remainder of the summer transfer window.
