Man City makes decision on Stefan Ortega and Ederson future
Manchester City are considering promoting backup goalkeeper Stefan Ortega to the number one spot if Ederson departs the club this summer.
Senior football correspondent Pete O’Rourke, on the Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, revealed rumors of Ortega’s discontent with being Ederson’s backup.
A recent Football Insider report suggested Manchester City might sell Ederson for a substantial fee due to interest from Saudi Arabian clubs. O’Rourke believes selling Ederson would allow Ortega to become the first-choice goalkeeper and facilitate the acquisition of a new backup content with a secondary role.
Ortega, signed on a free transfer in 2022, is contracted until June 2025. Negotiations regarding a contract extension haven’t been successful yet, despite City’s offer.
Despite being the understudy, Ortega has impressed with eight clean sheets in 19 appearances this season compared to Ederson’s 16 in 43 outings. He is expected to start in the upcoming FA Cup final against Manchester United after filling in for the injured Ederson in recent games.
Selling Ederson could generate much-needed revenue for City to balance their finances. This aligns with Pep Guardiola’s anticipated squad refresh to maintain their dominance after securing a fourth consecutive Premier League title.
Bernardo Silva is another potential departure, with “Football Insider” reporting that City would accept a £50 million offer from PSG for the midfielder.
