Ederson withdrawn from Brazil’s Copa America squad
Brazil has made notable changes to their Copa America squad, including the withdrawal of goalkeeper Ederson due to injury.
According to ESPN, the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) announced on Sunday that the Manchester City star, who sustained a small fracture to his eye socket in a collision with Tottenham’s Cristian Romero, will be replaced by São Paulo’s Rafael.
In response to CONMEBOL’s decision to expand squad sizes from 23 to 26 players, Brazil has also added Juventus defender Bremer, Atalanta midfielder Ederson, and Porto forward Pepe.
This adjustment follows a poor run in the South American qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup, which prompted the appointment of Coach Dorival Junior in January.
The original 23-man squad included young talents like 17-year-old Endrick but omitted experienced players such as Casemiro, Richarlison, and Gabriel Jesus. Junior emphasized that all players have an equal opportunity to earn a starting spot, regardless of when they were called up.
Brazil’s Copa America campaign kicks off against Costa Rica on June 24, followed by matches against Paraguay and Colombia.
The tournament will take place in the United States from June 20 to July 14, with Brazil playing friendlies against Mexico and the U.S. as part of their preparations.
Ederson celebrated Manchester City’s Premier League victory over West Ham, marking a bittersweet moment as he steps back from national duties to recover.
