Ederson slams Rodri’s Player of the Season omission
Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson has expressed his strong disagreement with the decision to exclude teammate Rodri from the Premier League Player of the Season shortlist.
While Ederson acknowledges the talent of the nominated players, which includes the likes of Phil Foden, Erling Haaland, and Alexander Isak, he believes Rodri’s contribution to City’s title charge has been undeniable.
“There are good players, but I see Rodri as a great candidate who isn’t on the list,” Ederson told ESPN Brasil. “I don’t understand why he’s not on the list either. Honestly, that’s unacceptable.”
Rodri’s importance to City is underscored by the team’s unbeaten record in the league whenever he features. City’s three losses this season all occurred during his suspension.
With City on the cusp of a historic fourth consecutive title, Ederson says he will be supporting Foden’s candidacy for the award.
“So I think I’ll be rooting for Phil to win, because Phil is also having a great season, he’s helped us a lot. This season he’s scored more goals, provided more assists, been more consistent and more important to the team too.”
Ederson also commented on the evolution of manager Pep Guardiola, attributing the team’s continued success to their established playing style and Guardiola’s growing experience.
“You can always change, there are always changes,” Ederson said. “And just as he’s changed, I’ve changed too, and he’s getting more experienced, with less hair. But there I see him as a calmer coach now.”
Looking ahead to the title race, Ederson believes City’s experience will be the deciding factor against a hungry Arsenal side.
“We’ve experienced it on two previous occasions against Liverpool, which was practically the same way, and this year is no different. We have to win the remaining two games if we want to be champions.”
