Dani Olmo’s release clause deadline approaching amid Manchester City interest, Fabrizio Romano confirms
Manchester City have less than a week to activate the release clause in Dani Olmo’s RB Leipzig contract, should they be considering the option, it has been confirmed.
The Premier League champions are currently in the process of assessing potential midfield transfer targets this summer due to various factors, including uncertainty over the futures of current first-team stars and a lack of back-up in specific squad areas.
Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva have been consistently linked with moves away from the Etihad Stadium over the last few weeks, although the current trend points towards their stay at the club into the new season.
Furthermore, Manchester City recognizes the need for a new back-up in defensive midfield following Kalvin Phillips’ failure to adapt to the club’s style of play. The club, along with Rodri, understands that another season of dependency on a single player is unsustainable.
Interest in Dani Olmo
The need for midfield recruits has drawn Manchester City to several options recently, with Dani Olmo long being a player admired within the Etihad Stadium offices. However, if Manchester City aims to activate the release clause in the player’s current Bundesliga contract, they must act quickly.
Transfer market insider Fabrizio Romano confirmed that the €60 million release clause in Dani Olmo’s current RB Leipzig contract is set to expire on Monday, July 15.
City has admired Olmo from afar for several seasons and assessed the possibility of signing the player last summer before turning their attention to alternative candidates due to differences in stylistic ambitions for Pep Guardiola’s squad.
Manchester City has already allowed one release clause to expire this summer concerning a known transfer target of the club, with Etihad bosses believing that Bruno Guimaraes can be secured for a figure below his £100 million fee at Newcastle United.
The player is currently on holiday following duties at Copa America, and while all concerned will be wary of allowing him time to recover from the intensity of a long season, conversations will no doubt be ongoing in the background to assess City’s interest.
